The dream of endless freedom, dusty tracks, snow-capped Andean peaks and the deep blue Pacific - who doesn't dream it? For many campervan fans, the Panamericana is the ultimate destination, the „final boss“ of all road trips, if you like. For a long time, Campcruisers was your reliable partner for Europe and North America, but we are well aware that many adventurers are increasingly looking southwards.
That's why there's great news today: The wait is over. Campcruisers is now also represented in Latin America!
We have massively expanded our portfolio and now offer you access to some of the most spectacular landscapes on earth. Anyone who has always wanted to drive their own „home on four wheels“ through the high plateaus of the Andes or the vastness of Patagonia now has the opportunity to do so. The focus is on two absolute dream destinations to start with: Peru and Argentina.
Here you can find out all about the new vehicles, the many new locations and why we unfortunately had to postpone a planned stop for the time being. We also take you on a mental journey along the legendary Ruta 40 - as inspiration for your next big holiday.
Peru: discover the land of the Incas off-road
Peru is much more than just Machu Picchu. It is a country of extreme contrasts: the dry desert coast in the west, the steaming Amazon basin in the east and the mighty wall of the Andes in between. To be able to explore this terrain with real flexibility, you need the right vehicle.
The fleet: from panel vans to 4×4 adventures
When selecting the vehicles for Peru, the main focus was on off-road capability, without forgetting comfort.
- For comfort lovers: If you don't want to do without the standard you're used to in South America, you can opt for the comfortable panel van. These are ideal for travelling the Panamericana along the coast or using the well-developed roads to the tourist hotspots.
- For explorers (Toyota Hilux): If you want to go deeper into the country, you need ground clearance and all-wheel drive. Here, the Toyota Hilux is the measure of all things. Campcruisers offers various camper models based on the Hilux.
- With trailer cab: This variant offers the perfect compromise. You have the power of a pickup, but enjoy the protection of a fixed cabin with a bed and small kitchen in the back. Ideal for the harsh climate in the Andes.
- With roof tents: For that pure outdoor feeling, the Hilux models are also available with up to two roof tents. Not only is this often a cheaper option, but it also brings you as close to nature as possible.
Maximum flexibility: takeover throughout the country
The main location of our partner is in the capital city Lima. Lima is the perfect starting point - a world-class culinary centre and the country's logistical hub. But we know that Peru is huge and holiday time is precious.
That's why the new offer is so special: You can hire the vehicles in almost all major cities in the country. This allows you exciting one-way rentals (for an extra charge), for example to start directly in the Andes or in the north.
In addition to Lima, pick-ups and returns are now possible at the following locations:
- In the South & the Andes: Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, Tacna and Ica.
- On the north coast: Trujillo, Chiclayo, Tumbes and Máncora (perfect for beach lovers).
- Inland & towards the Amazon: Chachapoyas, Jaén, Tarapoto and Pucallpa.
This service may save you days of travelling and leaves you more time for the essentials: the experience on site.
Brief update on Bolivia
This is where the announcement for Bolivia should actually be. The Salar de Uyuni - the largest salt desert in the world - is at the top of many bucket lists. We had firmly planned to include Bolivia as a destination.
However, transparency is important to us: due to the current fuel crisis in the country we have postponed this project until further notice. The supply of diesel and petrol is currently so unreliable that we cannot send you on your journey with a clear conscience. A road trip should mean freedom, not hours of waiting at petrol stations. However, as soon as the situation stabilises, Bolivia will certainly become an issue again.
Argentina: Infinite expanses for every budget
Let's move on to the second big newcomer: Argentina. The eighth largest country in the world is perfect for campers. The roads are endless, the landscapes change dramatically every few hundred kilometres and the feeling of freedom is more tangible here than almost anywhere else.
In Argentina, we have an extremely wide range of tours to suit every type of traveller.
The vehicle classes
From backpacker budgets to luxury requirements, everything is included:
- The manoeuvrable van: Ideal for 2 people who like it „spartan“ and inexpensive. These small campers are perfect for travelling inconspicuously, consume less fuel and are easy to manoeuvre. If you are focussing on the outdoor experience and only need the car for sleeping and driving, this is the right choice.
- The luxury motorhome: At the other end of the scale are our fully equipped motorhomes on Mercedes Sprinter base. They can comfortably accommodate up to 4 people. These vehicles offer all the amenities you would expect from a modern European campervan: Hot water, shower, heating (important in Patagonia!) and plenty of storage space. This makes travelling for several weeks extremely comfortable.
One-way hire: Conquer the south
The main location of our partner is in the South of Buenos Aires. This is a good starting point to acclimatise and stock up on supplies. But Argentina is long - very long. It's over 3,000 kilometres from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia.
We therefore offer the option of returning the camper at various locations. Possible drop-off points are
- Salta (in the far north)
- Mendoza (in the wine country)
- Bariloche (at the gateway to Patagonia)
- El Calafate (at the Perito Moreno Glacier)
- Ushuaia (at the end of the world)
Yes, this service costs extra. But when you consider how time-consuming it is to return a vehicle over these huge distances, the price is absolutely fair. It allows you to „go the distance“ without having to drive all the way back again.
Inspiration for travel planning: the myth of Ruta 40
Now you have the vehicle - but where should you go? Argentina has plenty to offer for months, but one route in particular stands out: the legendary Ruta 40. It is one of the longest motorways in the world and runs parallel to the Andes from the Bolivian border in the north all the way down to Patagonia.
Here is a suggested route for anyone who wants to get the most out of their trip to Argentina.
Stage 1: The wild north (Salta and Jujuy)
Anyone who picks up a campervan in Salta or drives there is immersed in a world of red rocks and giant cacti. The Quebrada de Humahuaca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that must be seen to be believed. The colours of the mountains, such as the „Mountain of 14 Colours“ (Serranía de Hornocal), seem almost unreal. The air is thin, the sun is strong and the culture has a strong indigenous flavour. A detour to the wine villages around Cafayate is also worthwhile - here the Torrontés wine grows at record heights.
Stage 2: Cuyo and the wines (Mendoza)
Further south, you reach the Mendoza region. Here, the Ruta 40 shows its delightful side. Mendoza is the heart of Argentinian viticulture. The various wineries can be easily reached by campervan (of course, only if you don't drive afterwards or stay overnight at the winery). The view of the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America, is breathtaking from here.
Stage 3: The Switzerland of South America (Bariloche and the Lakes Region)
The further south you go, the greener it gets. Around Bariloche and San Martín de los Andes, the landscape is almost reminiscent of the Alps - if it weren't for the araucaria trees and volcanoes. The „Ruta de los Siete Lagos“ (Route of the Seven Lakes) is a short section of the Ruta 40 that is hard to beat in terms of scenery. Crystal-clear lakes, dense forests and snow-capped peaks make this region the perfect place for hiking and lakeside camping.
Stage 4: The real Patagonia (El Chaltén and El Calafate)
The famous Patagonian steppe begins south of Bariloche. The motto here is: put the car on cruise control and enjoy the vastness. The wind, which almost always blows here, is a constant companion.
The goal is El Chaltén, the trekking Mecca of Argentina. The view of the Fitz Roy massif at sunrise, when the granite peaks glow red, is magical. As you have the camper with you, you are flexible and can choose the best weather windows for hiking.
Just a few hours further south, in El Calafate the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is one of the few ice fields in the world that is still growing. The cracking and crashing sound when chunks of ice the size of houses fall into the lake is a sound you will never forget.
Stage 5: The end of the world (Ushuaia)
If you savour the one-way rental right to the end, you can drive all the way to Tierra del Fuego. The ferry crossing across the Strait of Magellan is an adventure in itself. In Ushuaia you are at the southernmost end of the navigable world. This is where the Andes meet the sea. A photo at the „Fin del Mundo“ sign is a must before you hand in the camper and board the plane with a rucksack full of memories.
Realise your dreams now
South America is not a destination for a package holiday. It is a continent for explorers, for people who are ready to embrace the unknown. With the new locations and the versatile fleet, Campcruisers is now making this dream more tangible and safer. Whether in a robust Hilux through the Peruvian Andes or in a comfortable Sprinter through the pampas of Argentina - adventure awaits.
